Sunday, Oct. 26th

This morning I preached a sermon using 4 chairs to illusrate where each of us have been at least some time in our life spiritually. Either we didn't want God and could care less or we now love God and want to know Him more. Or, we are somewhere stuck in the middle. Non-Christians use sin to meet their basic human needs. Christians are supposed to use Christ to meet their basic human needs. What happens when a born again Christian reverts to using sin to meet their needs rather than Christ? Can a true Christian continue to use sin to meet the needs that Christ is supposed to? Can we even call this person a Christian? Can a person lose his or her salvation? Or, did they ever have it to begin with? Wouldn't this make it impossible to lose something one never had in the first place?

Just a few questions I have swirling in my head after this morning's sermons. I seemed to hit home with a few and maybe completely confused others. Let me know what you think.

Pastor James,
Your sermon on 10/26 was excellent and the visual aids of the four chairs really drove the message home for me. It really made me think about which chair I am in (most of the time, some of the time, every now and then, at home, at work, etc.). It made me focus on the fact I need continual improvements/growth and helped me think about specific things to work on. I really appreciated the sermon and I am sure others did too. Thanks for your efforts.

Pastor James,
You sermon truly helped me see where I am at in my life with Christ. Your examples allowed me to truly understand where I am and what improvements I need to make. Also it helped me to see what I need to do to help my friends who are in chairs 1 and 2 find a seat in chair 3 or 4. I also really liked your word choice for chair three "the hot spot." Honestly, I believe that most Christians, myself included, find too much comfort in this chair and never grow out of it. This sermon really did help me realize what I have to change about my life. Keep up the good work and IWU says hi.

Bill and Sarah,

Thank you for your thoughts. I'm glad the sermon helped you realize where you are in your spiritual life. before we can go where we want we have to know where we are. I myself think often about the chair I'm in and how to stay in it. Every human is tempted to look over his or her spiritual shoulder every once in a while. We are tempted to look too long or indulge in more than we need. The real question is: "how do we overcome sin in our life." Why do we move to the next seat? Is it because it's in our best interest to do so? Or, are we truly convicted for our sins and therefor urged to move to the next seat? Look forward to hearing your thoughts in the future.
